Merops Orientalis is the scientific name for this bird, also known as Small Bee-eater. These birds devour insects on a large scale, mostly bees and hence the name. Its amazing to realize that these birds are existing since aeons. There are various instance of references being made in our ancient Indian Hindu texts about birds. Just for an instance, in the epic Mahabharath, prince Abhimanyu's chariot-flag bore the insignia of a golden bee-eater. Vernacular name for this bird : Veda Raghu, derived from Sanskrit Ved-Raghu ( Vedic parrot known to us since vedic times ).
